On The ‘MOVE’

Whether you are a keen PS3 gamer or not, you should have heard of The new Playstation Move. Sony’s new motion controller is set to rival the similar styling’s of the Wii. The new development shall work in conjunction with the PlaystationEye to create realistic on screen motions and game mechanics. There are two remotes featuring with the PlaystationMove. The two controllers collectively incorporate all of the buttons seen on the Playstation Dual Shock 3 or Sixaxis apart from R1, R2 and R3.

The Motion Controller’s most notable feature is the orb on the end. The orb acts as a marker for the PlaystationEye to pick up. The remarkable webcam can sense the slightest of movement that is undertaken with the user’s right hand. The Camera detects many types of movements, such as twisting, shaking, movement, distance away from the action as well as much more. For example, in a boxing or fighting game; the remote will sense when you are throwing a punch, in which direction, and with what power.

The motion controller features vibration-based haptic technology. In addition to providing a tracking reference, the controller’s orb light can be used to simulate aesthetic effects, such as the muzzle flash of a gun, or the paint on a brush. Other features of the Motion controller are the action buttons; they play the most important part of any Playstation game so their appearance on the Motion controller was compulsory. An analog trigger is situated on the underside of the remote, a wrist strap at the bottom as well as a USB extension port. A Strap located on the Motion controller was not only incorporated through common sense but due to the mass amount of televisions (In my case it was my ceiling) that gets damaged when the Wii remote swung from our hands.

The Sub controller, much alike the Nunchuck of the Wii does not feature a motion sensor, but it does feature an analog stick, L1 L2 L3, the PS button and the  and  buttons. The remote wirelessly works in conjunction with the Motion Controller, they will connect to the Ps3 through Bluetooth and will be battery free. The PlaystationMove will also have ‘on sofa’ multiplayer; this means that the controllers may get mixed up? However each controller can have a different coloured orb, meaning the camera will detect each controller as a separate device.

The first cameras that were revealed for the Playstation was back in 2003. The Eye toy produced the cameras view on the screen allowing the user to fight a boxer, make a meal or wash some windows. 7 years later and the camera has majorly advanced, catching the most sensitive of movements and inserting them into the action. The very responsive device will create the most realistic of situations.

By April 2011, at least 20 games are going to be released for use with PlaystationMove, such names will include Motion Fighter and Move Party designed specifically for the new device. It will also be incorporated with well known titles being released in the next year and existing games, through software updates. Such games include Tiger Woods PGA tour 11, SOCOM 4 and LittleBigPlanet.  The official trailer is also being shown to support shooters and sports, fist-fighting and co-op platforming.

Sony have stated ‘Move [PlaystationMove] is one of our big priorities for PlayStation 3 in Europe this year so look out for our ads and product updates.’ Judging by the following advert I will be sure to check out these adverts.

The incredibly sleek design, the amazingly responsive motion and the fantastic game mechanics should make for a great gaming future.

Expect the PlaystationMove to be released in late 2010 at the price of approximately £60.
