Call Of Duty = Cash On Demand?

With recent rumours that Activision were going to start charging for online Call of Duty play, I think this is a perfect time to bring up the Call of Duty franchise, and Activision as a company.

Call of Duty: World at War was one of the first Xbox 360 games I played; a good friend of mine said it was awesome and pretty much forced me to buy it and I did. And I’m glad I did! I had never played shooters or war games much before, and WaW was a pretty amazing game both offline and on. The offline story was amazing and the online game play was fun, although I must admit that the majority of the time I got pwned (but hey, I’m allowed to get away with it, being female and all!). However, this being an early 360 game I played, I thought that the pricey map packs were part of the deal. Now, I see differently.

In my opinion Activision are just trying to make the most money with what they have. This means top prices for games (although, the games are worth it!), along with additional DLC which seems overpriced most of the time. I haven’t purchased DLC but I have won/acquired codes and I’m kind of glad I didn’t pay so much for them as for what they are, they’re not worth it (but that may just be me not being a “hardcore fan”).

However, I do admit I am quite a hardcore guitar hero fan. I have loved guitar hero since GH2 was released, and I must tell you that I am pretty darn good at it. However, the thing that annoyed me is that between the numbered releases (1, 2, 3 – legends of rock, 4 – world tour, 5) which are excellent games, that they seemed to over-do the releases (Van Halen, Metallica, Aerosmith and Greatest Hits to name a few…), plus the release of band hero, it just seems that Activision wants to have all our monies. On top of THAT, there is also DLC available for these games which often equate to albums in game being more expensive than albums to purchase “in real life”.

But it’s not just DLC, rumours were that for the Call of Duty: Black Ops release there was going to be a price tag added on for playing online. My question would be – except for the hardcore COD fans – who would really want to pay another subscription charge on top of Xbox live gold accounts? And how much would it be?

Even though this time they claim that they’re not introducing a charge for online play at present, can we believe them? And even if they don’t, how long will it be before they do?

Exactly, I reckon it will only be those hardcore COD fans who will pay to play online. The rest of us will just have to find another online multiplayer shooter…
