PS3 Firmware Update Problems?

Update

After playing around with the settings on my T.V. and PS3, I cannot find a way to fix the problem (however, it might be worth looking into on other set ups). The problem with the update seems to originate with the fact that the frames per second is not high enough when playing a 3D blu-ray. A normal blu-ray runs at 24 f.p.s., and a 3D blu-ray runs at 48 f.p.s. – double the frames per second is required because of the two different images running in alternate frames (which is what causes the 3D effect when wearing the glasses).

However, when playing a 3D blu-ray on the PS3, the f.p.s. is still set at 24, which is the most likely reason why the blurriness occurs.

With Sony being a leader in the 3D industry, it is surprising that this problem was not resolved earlier on, but we’re sure they’re probably working on it right now.

The PlayStation 3 update v3.50 – which today was available to download – was meant to bring 3D Blu-ray support to the console. However, after trying to play a 3D blu-ray on my PS3, there seems to be some problems with the update. The only way to describe the effects I experienced is that the console wasn’t able to keep up with the 3D image on the screen. This led to a blurry picture where there was movement on the screen, and it gave me a bit of a headache looking at it. There have also been other reports that some people cannot get their 3D blu-rays working at all on the system saying that they aren’t recognized.

Hopefully another update will be out soon enough to fix these bugs, but in the mean time don’t get rid of your 3D blu-ray player just yet, just in case it’s a while.

Keep an eye on the PlayStation Blog for any news relating to the update.
