Avatar Puzzle Pop Review
Avatar Puzzle Pop is a relatively simple puzzle game where you are faced with various coloured blocks, and you have to link the same colours together with rods. As the name suggests, there is avatar support where your avatar does different actions depending on how well – or not so well – you are doing in the game.
The game has tutorials so you know how to play each of the 6 game modes available – line, stage, bomb, dice, endless and 2 player. However, just be warned that the tutorials are not under the right headings for each game type, but it shouldn’t matter too much as you will have to do them all at some point anyway. The tutorials are straightforward but repetitive and the controls are simple.
The ‘stage’ mode requires you to clear lines of blocks, until you get a pair of symbols on the board which you have to match to finish a level. The ‘bomb’ mode has bombs which have a number on them – the number decreases with every line added to the board, and you must get rid of them before they reach zero. In ‘dice’ mode you have to match different die faces to make a number – different numbers give better scores with ’7′ being the best and you earn the most points. Get certain scores – like 2 – and you will lose points. The other game modes are similar to these ones, and easy enough to pick up.
The game is fun to play for a while, but the main problem is the level of difficulty I encountered – the levels seem very easy even after playing for a while. The retro style music is quite pleasing to listen to, but can grate on you after longer periods.
Considering this was a one-man project, it is a nice little puzzle game. If you enjoy puzzle games, this may be the kind of thing you like – my favourite mode being the ‘dice’ mode as it was a little more challenging. For 80 Microsoft Points, it doesn’t break the bank, and in return you will get a fairly average puzzle game with your avatar egging you in while you play it.
